When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned (and the AC Breaks)

Last weekend was a whirlwind—full of family time and our small-town celebration. My husband was preparing to head out of town for work, which added a few extra kinks to our already packed schedule. He left for his Saturday flight, only to face a delay… that turned into over 21 hours (he kindly corrected me as I was working on this draft).

Back at home, the girls and I made a quick trip to our camper for a special occasion: a 90th birthday party. One of our former camper neighbors had made it his goal to return to the resort to celebrate his big milestone, and it was so fun to be part of it. After the party, we spent a couple of days enjoying the heat (and the pool!) and just slowing down.

But when we returned home, we were hit with a not-so-fun surprise—our AC had stopped working. Thankfully, the HVAC technician came quickly, but a needed part wouldn’t arrive for two more days. Cue the fan army and the strategic window-and-blinds shuffle. Thankfully, a stretch of cooler weather helped take the edge off.

This week didn’t go exactly as we planned, but it wasn’t all bad. I managed to check off a few projects around the house, and I’m still working on my 1,000 gifts list. It’s been a bit slow-going, but I’m not one to give up.

And a bit of good news: my husband made it back from his work trip—this time without any delays. And our AC? Fully functional again.

Even in weeks like this—ones that twist and stretch and go sideways—there’s still gratitude to be found.

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” — Romans 12:12

Sometimes the gift is simply making it through the unexpected with a little bit of coffee—and maybe a working fan.

Update: Since writing this post, life has continued to throw a few curveballs. The girls and I made a quick trip back to the camper—only to realize the laundry basket with all of my clothes (and our food!) had been left at home. No swimsuit and none of my essential running gear meant an extra 1 hour and 40 minutes in the car just to grab the basics.

The upside? I had perfect weather for my long run Saturday morning.

Our camper neighbors also went home earlier than expected. We’d hoped to spend more time with them this week, but we’re so grateful for the time we did have together—and we’re already looking forward to next time. Until we meet again.
