The other day, my mom shared a message she heard about manna. I wish I knew who to credit, but even without a source, the truth was convicting:

Manna is a picture of daily time in God’s Word.

That idea stayed with me. In Exodus, when the Israelites were wandering the wilderness, God provided manna—bread from heaven—every morning. They had to gather it daily. If they tried to save some for the next day, it spoiled.

God was teaching them something beyond nourishment: dependence.

They couldn’t stockpile trust.

They couldn’t live off of yesterday’s faith.

They had to show up again—each day.

And so do we.

Manna and the Bible

Jesus made the connection even clearer in the New Testament:

“I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.” – John 6:48–50

Jesus is our true manna.

And He invites us not just to believe in Him once, but to walk with Him daily. To open the Bible each morning. To gather what we need for this day—not tomorrow, not next week.

We don’t get to live off of yesterday’s quiet time, last week’s sermon, or what God did in our lives last year.

We need a fresh word, fresh perspective, and fresh peace—daily.

Additional verses:

  • Matthew 4:4 – “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

  • Lamentations 3:22–23 – “His mercies are new every morning.”

  • Psalm 1:2 – “...who meditates on His law day and night.”

  • Joshua 1:8 – “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips…”

Reflect:

  • Are you trying to live off spiritual leftovers?

  • What “manna” has God given you recently through Scripture?

  • Where can you carve out just 5 minutes today to gather something fresh?

Prayer:

God, thank You for providing what I need each day. Give me a hunger for Your Word and the discipline to come back daily. Help me not to rely on yesterday’s strength, but to meet You this morning. Amen.
